Streaky Bay is a sleepy coastal town on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula, where the Great Australian Bight meets red dirt and wheat fields. The name comes from the streaks of colour in the bay's water, caused by seaweed and seagrass beds. It's a place for serious seafood lovers, beachcombers, and those who want to escape the crowds. The vibe is laid-back, the fishing is legendary, and the sunsets over the jetty are pure magic.
Highlights & What to See
- Streaky Bay Jetty – A classic fishing jetty where you can cast a line for squid, whiting, or salmon. In summer, watch for the resident dolphins that often swim right up to the pylons.
- Murphy's Haystacks – Ancient, wind-sculpted pink granite boulders that rise dramatically from a wheat field about 40 km south of town. These geological oddities are a photographer's dream at sunrise or sunset.
- Point Labatt Conservation Park – The only mainland breeding colony of Australian sea lions in Australia. A short boardwalk leads to a clifftop lookout where you can watch the sea lions loafing on the beach below.
- Baird Bay – Just north of Streaky Bay, this sheltered inlet is famous for swimming with Australian sea lions and bottlenose dolphins in the wild. It's a bucket-list wildlife encounter.
- Streaky Bay Foreshore – A grassy park lined with Norfolk Island pines, perfect for a picnic or a game of cricket. The calm waters of the bay are ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding.
Suggested Time to Spend
Streaky Bay is best as a two-night stopover on a road trip around the Eyre Peninsula. One full day lets you explore the highlights: morning at Murphy's Haystacks and Point Labatt, afternoon fishing or kayaking on the bay, and a sunset stroll on the jetty. If you want to do the Baird Bay swim, add another half-day. For anglers, you could easily spend three days chasing the legendary southern bluefin tuna and King George whiting in the offshore waters.
