Santa Teresa Mission

Deep in the red heart of Australia, Santa Teresa Mission (also known as Ltyentye Apurte) offers a rare glimpse into contemporary Aboriginal life in the Central Desert. This small, predominantly Arrernte community sits on the edge of the Simpson Desert, about 80 kilometres southeast of Alice Springs. While not a typical tourist destination, it rewards the curious traveller with genuine cultural encounters, striking desert landscapes, and a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path atmosphere. The mission was established in the 1950s and today the community runs an acclaimed art centre, a bakery, and a small store. Visiting here is about listening, learning, and appreciating a way of life far removed from the coastal cities.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a half-day here, arriving mid-morning to explore the art centre, grab lunch at the bakery, and take a short walk. If you’re keen to join a cultural tour or simply soak up the quiet atmosphere, a full day is rewarding. There is no accommodation in the mission itself, so plan to return to Alice Springs or a nearby camping ground by sunset. The drive from Alice Springs is about an hour on a sealed road, making this an easy day trip.
