South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula unfurls south of Adelaide like a secret garden of vine-draped hills, empty surf beaches and hamlets that seem to have paused mid-century. This is a region where you can taste shiraz from a cellar door at dawn, watch southern right whales breach from a clifftop, and then sink into a bowl of locally caught garfish as the sun melts into the Southern Ocean. It’s a place that rewards slow wandering — every winding road leads to another cove, another vineyard, another story.
Highlights & What to See
- McLaren Vale – One of Australia’s great wine regions, famous for bold shiraz and grenache. Don’t miss the d’Arenberg Cube, a surreal architectural folly that houses a winery, art gallery and restaurant.
- Victor Harbor – A classic seaside town where you can ride a horse-drawn tram to Granite Island, spot fairy penguins at dusk, and walk the rugged Encounter Bikeway.
- Deep Creek Conservation Park – The peninsula’s wild heart: hike the Deep Creek Waterfall trail, then watch for kangaroos and echidnas on the clifftop Heysen Trail section.
- Second Valley – A sleepy fishing village with a stunning jetty and a hidden beach perfect for swimming and snorkelling in calm, clear waters.
- Cape Jervis – Gateway to Kangaroo Island (a ferry ride away), but also a launch point for whale-watching cruises (June–October) and dramatic coastal walks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give the Fleurieu Peninsula at least two full days — three if you want to hike and taste wine without rushing. Base yourself in McLaren Vale or Victor Harbor. On day one, explore the wine region and do a coastal walk at Deep Creek. On day two, head south to Victor Harbor and the wilder beaches. If you have a third day, take the Kangaroo Island ferry for a day trip or linger in the quiet coves around Second Valley.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Adelaide Hills – Just 30 minutes north, a cool-climate wine region with German-style Hahndorf and the Mount Lofty Summit views.
- Kangaroo Island – A 45-minute ferry from Cape Jervis; a wildlife wonderland with sea lions, koalas and dramatic rock formations.
- Yorke Peninsula – Across Gulf St Vincent, a quieter counterpart with surf beaches and historic copper-mining towns.
- Barossa Valley – An hour’s drive north-east, Australia’s most famous wine region, renowned for big reds and heritage cellar doors.
- Limestone Coast – Further south-east, home to the Coonawarra wine region and the volcanic landscapes of Mount Gambier.
