Stretching east from Alice Springs like a spine of ancient rock, the East Macdonnell Ranges are a quieter, more rugged counterpart to the better-known West MacDonnells. This is outback Australia at its most raw: ochre ridges, deep gorges, and ghost gums clinging to dry creek beds. The drive along the Lasseter Highway (turning off onto the Ross Highway) offers a classic Red Centre self-drive experience, with plenty of spots to pull over and soak in the vastness. Whether you're hiking to a waterhole or camping under a canopy of stars, the East Macdonnells reward those who venture beyond the tourist trail.
Highlights & What to See
- Trephina Gorge – A stunning sandstone gorge with a permanent waterhole, perfect for a short walk or a picnic. The rim walk offers sweeping views over the surrounding ranges.
- N'Dhala Gorge – Home to one of the Central Australia's most significant collections of Aboriginal rock carvings, some estimated to be 10,000 years old. A 4WD is recommended for the access road.
- John Hayes Rockhole – A series of rock pools and cascades that are especially photogenic after rain. The short walk from the carpark leads to a tranquil oasis.
- Ross River Homestead – A historic outback station turned tourist retreat, offering a glimpse into pioneer life and a cold beer at the bar.
- Emily Gap – A sacred site for the Arrernte people, with striking rock walls and a permanent waterhole. The gap is also a great spot for birdwatching.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan a full day to explore the highlights at a relaxed pace. Start early from Alice Springs (45 minutes to Trephina Gorge), spend the morning hiking and exploring gorges, have lunch at Ross River Homestead, and then head to N'Dhala Gorge in the afternoon. If you're camping, an overnight stay allows for a sunset hike and stargazing – the night skies here are phenomenal.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs – The gateway to the MacDonnells, with cultural attractions like the Alice Springs Desert Park and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
- West Macdonnell Ranges – Home to iconic sites such as Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, and Ormiston Gorge. A classic loop combines both ranges.
- Uluru & Kata Tjuta – A 4.5-hour drive southwest along the Lasseter Highway, these are must-see icons of the Red Centre.
- Finke Gorge National Park – About 2 hours south, this park protects the ancient Finke River and Palm Valley, with its unique red cabbage palms.
- Rainbow Valley – A colourful sandstone bluff just off the Lasseter Highway, particularly beautiful at sunset.
