On the far eastern edge of the Lasseter Highway, Cordillo Downs is a remote outback station that feels like a frontier outpost. The vast red plains, ancient river red gums, and a palpable sense of isolation define this corner of the Northern Territory. It's a place for travellers who want to truly get off the grid and experience the raw beauty of the Australian interior.
Highlights & What to See
- Cordillo Downs Homestead Ruins – The stone ruins of the original homestead, built in the 1880s, stand as a poignant reminder of early pastoral life. The surrounding landscape offers a stark, photogenic backdrop.
- Witjira National Park – Just south, this park protects the Dalhousie Springs, a series of artesian hot springs that are a welcome oasis. Swim in the warm, crystal-clear water surrounded by palm trees.
- Simpson Desert Conservation Park – To the east, the edge of the Simpson Desert offers some of the most spectacular dune fields in Australia. The famous Birdsville Track starts nearby.
- Outback Stargazing – With zero light pollution, the night sky here is an astronomical spectacle. The Milky Way stretches from horizon to horizon, and shooting stars are common.
- Station Life – The working station still operates, and you may see stockyards, windmills, and perhaps a few hardy cattle. It offers a genuine glimpse into remote station life.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors pass through Cordillo Downs in a day as part of a longer outback drive, but to truly soak it in, spend one night camping under the stars. If you include a visit to Dalhousie Springs (about an hour south), plan for a full day. The best time to visit is during the cooler months from April to September.
