Rising from the red desert like a colossal flat-topped mesa, Mount Conner is one of the Northern Territory's most dramatic and overlooked landmarks. Often mistaken for Uluru from a distance, this 300-metre-high tabletop mountain is actually a separate geological formation—a remnant of an ancient seabed. Its sheer cliffs and rust-red hues shift with the sun, and its isolation on the Lasseter Highway makes for a mesmerising outback encounter. Few travellers stop here, so you'll likely have the view all to yourself.
Highlights & What to See
- Scenic lookout – Pull into the designated rest area on the Lasseter Highway for a front-row view of Mount Conner's flat summit and layered escarpments. Sunrise and sunset are spectacular, painting the rock in fiery oranges and purples.
- Photography – The vast, empty landscape around the mount offers endless composition possibilities, especially with the desert oaks and spinifex in the foreground.
- Wildlife spotting – Keep an eye out for red kangaroos, dingoes, and wedge-tailed eagles soaring above the mesa.
- Outback solitude – This is one of the quietest spots on the Lasseter Highway, perfect for a peaceful break away from the crowds at Uluru.
Suggested Time to Spend
Mount Conner is a quick stop – allow 20 to 30 minutes to stretch your legs, take photos, and soak in the views. It's best visited as a brief detour on your way between Uluru and Kings Canyon or Alice Springs. If you're driving the Red Centre Way, time your stop for late afternoon when the light is golden and the rock glows.
