Halfway between Alice Springs and Uluru, Curtin Springs Station is a working cattle property that doubles as a classic outback stopover. Here, red dirt meets mulga scrub, and the stillness of the desert is broken only by the clink of a cold beer at the rustic bar. It’s a place to refuel, stretch your legs, and get a genuine taste of station life.
Highlights & What to See
- Walk the Salt Lake – A short self-guided trail leads to the edge of a vast, shimmering salt lake. At sunrise or sunset, the sky’s reflection creates a mesmerising mirror effect.
- Bird Hide & Waterhole – The station’s permanent waterhole attracts dozens of bird species, including Major Mitchell’s cockatoos and zebra finches. Bring binoculars and sit quietly.
- Station Tour – Join a guided tour to learn about sustainable cattle farming in the desert, see the historic homestead, and hear stories of early settlers.
- Dinner Under the Stars – The station’s campfire dinners are legendary: hearty outback fare like kangaroo stew and damper, served with yarns about life on the land.
- Aboriginal Art & Crafts – The gift shop showcases authentic local art, including dot paintings and handcrafted boomerangs, with proceeds supporting Indigenous communities.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers break the drive for 1–2 hours to grab a meal, walk the salt lake, and birdwatch. If you want to soak up the atmosphere, stay overnight in one of the simple cabins or pitch a tent at the campground. An overnight stop lets you enjoy the campfire dinner and an early-morning walk before the heat sets in.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – Just 90 km south, this World Heritage site is the region’s main draw. Plan to arrive early for sunrise at Uluru.
- Kings Canyon – 150 km east, the canyon’s dramatic cliffs and waterholes offer a spectacular day hike (the Rim Walk is unmissable).
- Mount Connor – Often mistaken for Uluru, this flat-topped mesa is visible from the Lasseter Highway. Pull over for a photo stop.
- Erldunda Roadhouse – The junction of the Stuart and Lasseter highways, 60 km north, where you can refuel and see the resident emus.
- Finke River – One of the world’s oldest rivers, its dry sandy bed is a scenic detour for four-wheel-drive enthusiasts.
