William Creek is a tiny, isolated outpost on the Oodnadatta Track in South Australia’s far north, a classic outback pub-and-community stop that feels like a mirage in the red desert. With a permanent population of around a dozen, it’s a place where the pub, the roadhouse and the airstrip are the main attractions. Travellers come here for the raw outback atmosphere, the legendary hospitality at the William Creek Hotel, and as a base for scenic flights over Lake Eyre. It’s a quintessential outback experience – dusty, friendly and utterly remote.
Highlights & What to See
- William Creek Hotel – An iconic outback pub with cold beer, hearty meals, and walls plastered with memorabilia and traveller notes. Sit on the verandah and watch the sun set over the red dirt.
- Scenic Flights over Lake Eyre – The main reason many come: take a small plane from William Creek’s airstrip for a breathtaking aerial view of Australia’s largest salt lake, especially spectacular when it holds water.
- Oodnadatta Track – This historic dirt road runs right past William Creek; driving it is an adventure in itself, passing old railway sidings, ruins and the famous ‘Dog Fence’.
- William Creek Memorial Hall – A small community hall with historic photos and information about the area’s pioneering and railway history.
- Night Sky – With virtually no light pollution, the stars here are staggering; lie back and spot the Milky Way.
Suggested Time to Spend
