Rainbow Valley is a stunning natural sandstone formation located about 75 km south of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. This remote and peaceful site is named for the vibrant bands of color—ochre, red, purple, and orange—that streak the cliffs, especially striking at sunrise and sunset. It's a sacred Aboriginal site and a place of profound beauty, offering a true outback experience away from the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Rainbow Valley Conservation Reserve: The main attraction is the multi-hued sandstone cliffs and rock formations. Walk the short interpretive trail to the base of the cliffs for close-up views of the colors and ancient rock art.
- Sunset Viewing: The colors are most vivid in the late afternoon. Find a spot on the sandy plain opposite the cliffs and watch the rocks glow as the sun drops low.
- Bush Camping: The reserve has basic bush camping facilities (no water or power). Sleeping under the outback stars here is a magical experience.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for red kangaroos, dingoes, and a variety of birds, especially around dawn and dusk.
- Photography: The dramatic colors and stark landscape make this a paradise for photographers. Early morning light is also excellent.

If you're camping, plan to arrive before sunset to set up camp and enjoy the full evening light show.
