Parachilna Gorge is a rugged, red-rock cleft in the Flinders Ranges that feels like a secret passage through ancient Australia. The dirt road winds between towering quartzite cliffs, with ghost gums clinging to the rock faces and the dry creek bed occasionally holding water after rains. This is Outback South Australia at its most raw and beautiful — a place for self-drive adventurers who want to escape the crowds and soak in the silence and scale of the landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Parachilna Gorge Road — a scenic 4WD-friendly track that runs from the Parachilna township through the gorge to the Blinman region. The changing colours of the cliffs at sunrise and sunset are unforgettable.
- Angorichina Village — a former tuberculosis sanitarium turned quirky tourist village with accommodation, a café, and a small airstrip. Stop for a cold drink and a chat with the locals.
- Blinman — Australia’s highest town, with a historic pub, a working copper mine tour, and great views over the ranges. The Blinman Hotel serves hearty pub meals.
- Glass Gorge — a side trip off the main gorge track, offering a narrow, dramatic cleft with Aboriginal rock art sites and excellent birdwatching.
- Parachilna Hotel — the iconic “Prairie Hotel” serves gourmet Outback bush food (think camel, kangaroo, and emu) and has a legendary beer garden with million-dollar views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least half a day to drive the gorge road and make short stops. If you want to explore side gorges, visit Blinman, or enjoy a meal at the Prairie Hotel, plan for a full day. Many travellers combine it with a night at the Prairie Hotel or Angorichina Village to experience the sunset and starry skies.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Blinman — just 20 km north of the gorge, this historic mining town is a perfect lunch stop with the Blinman Hotel and mine tour.
- Lake Torrens — a massive salt lake to the west, best viewed from a scenic flight or a 4WD track; stark and photogenic.
- Parachilna — the tiny settlement at the gorge entrance, home to the Prairie Hotel and the start of the gorge drive.
- Bunyeroo Gorge — a stunning, narrow gorge with Aboriginal art and a great picnic spot, accessible via a 4WD track from the Flinders Ranges National Park.
