Deep within the ancient Finke Gorge National Park, Palm Valley is a breathtaking oasis that feels a world away from the red desert that surrounds it. This lush, palm-filled chasm is home to the rare red cabbage palm, a living fossil found nowhere else on Earth. A visit here is a journey into the heart of Australia's geological and botanical history, offering a serene contrast to the rugged outback landscapes.
Highlights & What to See
- Red Cabbage Palms: Marvel at the ancient Livistona mariae, a palm species that has survived since the continent was part of Gondwana. Their vibrant green fronds create a surreal scene against the red sandstone cliffs.
- Palm Valley Walk: A 1.5 km loop trail that winds through the valley floor, crossing a sandy creek bed and passing by towering palms and cycads. It's an easy, family-friendly walk that immerses you in the oasis.
- Kalarranga Lookout: For a panoramic view of the valley and the surrounding Finke River system, take the short but steep climb to this lookout. The contrast of green palms against the desert is unforgettable.
- Finke River: Believed to be one of the world's oldest rivers, the Finke flows through the park. After rains, it transforms into a temporary waterhole, attracting birdlife and creating a serene spot for a picnic.
- Aboriginal Heritage: The area is culturally significant to the Western Arrernte people. Look for ancient rock engravings and learn about the Dreamtime stories associated with the valley.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least half a day to experience Palm Valley properly. The drive from Kings Canyon is about 2.5 hours (partly on unsealed roads), so combine it with a visit to Kings Canyon itself for a full day's adventure. Arrive early to enjoy the cool morning light on the palms, and plan to walk the loop trail and the lookout – allow 1.5–2 hours for walks alone. If you're keen on photography or birdwatching, you could easily spend the entire day here. Note that the road in is 4WD only after rain, so check conditions beforehand.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Watarrka National Park: Home to Kings Canyon, this park has additional walks and viewpoints, including the Kathleen Springs Walk, a gentle trail to a waterhole.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: About 4 hours southwest, the world-famous monolith and domes are a must-see. Combine Palm Valley with a trip to Uluru for a complete Red Centre experience.
- West MacDonnell Ranges: Located east of Alice Springs, these ranges offer gorges, waterholes, and walks like the Larapinta Trail. They're a good stop if you're heading towards Alice Springs.
- Alice Springs: The gateway to the Red Centre, this town has cultural attractions, a desert park, and art galleries. It's about a 2-hour drive from Palm Valley.
