On the far edge of the Red Centre, Cactus Beach is a startling collision of rust-red desert and turquoise water. This remote stretch of sandstone and spinifex sits on the southern shore of Lake Amadeus, a vast salt lake that shimmers under the outback sun. It’s not a swimming beach — the lake is too shallow and salty — but the otherworldly vistas, total silence, and sense of being utterly alone in the landscape make it a memorable stop for adventurous travellers.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Amadeus lookout: Walk to the water’s edge at sunset when the salt crust turns pink and the distant rock formations catch the last light. The colours are spectacular.
- Salt-crusted shoreline: The ‘beach’ is a surreal expanse of cracked salt pans and ochre sand. Look for tiny salt crystals glittering underfoot.
- Birdwatching: Bring binoculars for banded stilts, red-necked avocets and the occasional wedge-tailed eagle circling overhead.
- Stargazing: With zero light pollution, the Milky Way arcs overhead on clear nights. It’s one of the darkest skies in Australia.
- Kings Canyon: Just 40 km north, the mighty sandstone walls and permanent waterholes of Kings Canyon offer hiking and swimming — a perfect complement to the lake’s stark beauty.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Cactus Beach — enough to walk the shoreline, take photos and soak in the silence. It works best as a sunset stop on a day trip from Kings Canyon Resort (30 minutes’ drive). If you’re camping nearby, an overnight stay lets you experience sunrise over the lake, when the colours are at their most dramatic.
