Glen Helen Gorge is a dramatic cleft in the West MacDonnell Ranges, where the Finke River has carved through ancient red quartzite. The gorge walls tower up to 100 metres high, and a permanent waterhole reflects the changing colours of the rock at sunrise and sunset. This is a place of deep cultural significance to the Arrernte people, and the sheer scale of the landscape leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.
Highlights & What to See
- The Gorge Walk: A short, easy trail leads to the waterhole, where you can paddle or simply sit and watch the light play on the cliffs.
- Sunset Viewing: The gorge walls blaze with orange and red as the sun drops behind the range – bring a chair and a cold drink.
- Birdwatching & Wildlife: Look for black-footed rock wallabies on the cliffs and listen for zebra finches and honeyeaters in the river gums.
- Swimming: The waterhole is a popular spot for a refreshing dip in the warmer months; the water is clear and cool.
- Photography: The contrast of deep blue sky, red rock and green river red gums makes for classic outback shots.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at the gorge, which is enough for the walk, a swim and sunset. If you’re driving the West MacDonnell Ranges, it’s a perfect lunch or afternoon stop. For a more immersive experience, camp overnight at the adjacent Glen Helen Resort and enjoy the gorge in the quiet morning light.
