Glen Helen Gorge is a dramatic cleft in the West MacDonnell Ranges, where the Finke River has carved through ancient red quartzite. The gorge walls tower up to 100 metres high, and a permanent waterhole reflects the changing colours of the rock at sunrise and sunset. This is a place of deep cultural significance to the Arrernte people, and the sheer scale of the landscape leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at the gorge, which is enough for the walk, a swim and sunset. If you’re driving the West MacDonnell Ranges, it’s a perfect lunch or afternoon stop. For a more immersive experience, camp overnight at the adjacent Glen Helen Resort and enjoy the gorge in the quiet morning light.
