Owen Springs Reserve

Owen Springs Reserve is a sprawling, semi-arid wilderness just south of Alice Springs, where the red dirt roads lead to historic homesteads, permanent waterholes, and startlingly green river red gums. This working cattle station turned conservation reserve offers a raw, self-guided outback experience – think 4WD tracks, birdlife at the springs, and a palpable sense of pioneer history. It’s the kind of place you come to for solitude, a picnic under a ghost gum, and the thrill of following the old Finke River route.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least a full half-day – ideally 4–5 hours – to explore the main homestead, a waterhole, and a short 4WD circuit. If you have a high-clearance vehicle and want to push deeper into the reserve, set aside a full day. The reserve is best visited between April and September (winter/spring) when temperatures are mild and the tracks are firm. Combine it with a morning at the Alice Springs Desert Park or an afternoon drive along the Larapinta Trail lookout points.
