Kunjarra (The Pebbles)
Rising abruptly from the red desert floor, Kunjarra (The Pebbles) is a striking cluster of rounded sandstone boulders that feels like an ancient sculpture garden. This sacred site of the Arrernte people is not only a place of deep cultural significance but also a photographer’s dream at sunrise and sunset, when the rocks glow in shades of ochre and gold. The short walking track weaves among the formations, offering unexpected views of the surrounding spinifex plains and the distant West MacDonnell Ranges.
Highlights & What to See
- Sunrise and sunset colour show – The sandstone catches the low-angle light, turning from pale cream to deep burnt orange; arrive early or stay late for the best experience.
- Kunjarra walking track – A gentle 1 km loop that leads you through the boulders, with interpretive signs explaining the area’s geology and significance to the Arrernte people.
- Photography opportunities – The contrast between the rounded pebbles and the stark desert landscape creates dramatic compositions; a wide-angle lens is ideal.
- Birdwatching – Look for zebra finches, spinifex pigeons, and the occasional peregrine falcon soaring above the rocks.
- Connection to Finke Gorge National Park – The Pebbles are a gateway to the park’s more remote 4WD tracks, including the famous Finke River.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30–45 minutes walking the loop and taking photos. If you want to capture the sunrise or sunset light, budget 1–1.5 hours including travel from Alice Springs (about 1.5 hours drive). It’s an easy stop on a day trip to Finke Gorge National Park – combine it with a visit to the historic Hermannsburg mission or a walk along the Finke River.
