Ellery Creek Bighole is a stunning waterhole nestled in the West MacDonnell Ranges, about 90 minutes west of Alice Springs. It's one of the most popular swimming spots in the region, thanks to its deep, permanent waterhole surrounded by towering red cliffs and ghost gums. The name "Bighole" comes from the large, deep plunge pool at the base of a narrow gorge, which feels like a natural oasis in the arid landscape. This is a place where you can cool off after a bushwalk, enjoy a picnic, and soak up the dramatic desert scenery.
Highlights & What to See
- Swimming in the Bighole – The main attraction is the deep, clear waterhole, perfect for a refreshing dip. The water is cold year-round, so be prepared for a shock!
- Ellery Creek Walk – A 3.5 km loop trail that follows the creek bed and climbs up to the ridge for panoramic views of the gorge and the surrounding ranges. Allow about 1.5 hours.
- Dolomite Walk – A shorter, easy 1 km walk that leads through a unique dolomite rock formation, showcasing ancient sea fossils and colourful mineral deposits.
- Birdwatching and Wildlife – Keep an eye out for rock wallabies, perentie lizards, and a variety of birds like zebra finches and honeyeaters that gather around the waterhole.
- Sunset Views – The cliffs glow red and orange as the sun sets, making it a fantastic spot for photography.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours here, which is enough for a swim and one of the short walks. If you want to do both the Ellery Creek Walk and the Dolomite Walk, plus relax by the water, plan for a half-day. It's a great stop on a self-drive itinerary along the Larapinta Drive, and you can easily combine it with other West MacDonnell sights like Ormiston Gorge or Glen Helen Gorge in a single day.
