Stretching across the floodplains east of Darwin, the Mary River Wetlands form one of Australia’s most prolific wildlife habitats. This vast network of billabongs, paperbark swamps and tidal rivers is a bird-watcher’s paradise and a crucial breeding ground for saltwater crocodiles. For international travellers, it’s a raw, immersive Top End experience that feels a world away from the city, yet is easily reached on a day trip or overnight stay.
Highlights & What to See
- Jumping Crocodile Cruises – Board a boat on the Adelaide River for an adrenaline-charged encounter with wild saltwater crocs leaping for bait. It’s the quintessential Top End thrill.
- Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve – A bird-lover’s haven with easy boardwalks and hides. Spot jabirus, magpie geese, whistling ducks and, in the dry season, huge python sunning themselves on the walkway.
- Mary River National Park – Explore floodplains and monsoon forests on 4WD tracks, or paddle a canoe through the billabongs. Keep an eye out for buffalo and wallabies.
- Corroboree Billabong – A serene wetland perfect for a guided cruise or kayak trip, teeming with birds and freshwater crocodiles.
- Window on the Wetlands Visitor Centre – Perched on a ridge near Fogg Dam, this interpretive centre offers spectacular views and exhibits explaining the region’s ecology and Aboriginal cultural significance.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors dedicate a full day (8–10 hours) to the wetlands, combining a morning croc cruise with an afternoon exploring Fogg Dam and the visitor centre. If you’re short on time, a half-day trip focusing on one cruise and a boardwalk walk is still rewarding. For a deeper experience, stay overnight at one of the nearby wilderness lodges or campgrounds to catch the dawn chorus and sunset over the billabongs.
