Leliyn Campground
Nestled in the heart of Nitmiluk National Park, Leliyn Campground (also known as Edith Falls Campground) offers a serene bush camping experience just a short drive from Katherine. Named after the stunning Edith Falls, this campground is a gateway to some of the Top End's most beautiful swimming holes and walking trails. With basic facilities and a relaxed atmosphere, it's the perfect base for exploring the park's rugged escarpments and tranquil waterholes.
Highlights & What to See
- Edith Falls (Leliyn) – The main attraction: a series of cascading waterfalls and deep plunge pools perfect for a refreshing swim. The upper pool is a particular favourite, with calm, clear water surrounded by pandanus palms.
- Leliyn Trail – A 2.6 km loop walk that takes you past the lower pool, up to the top of the falls, and back via a scenic lookout. Allow 1–2 hours for this easy-to-moderate hike with rewarding views.
- Sweetwater Pool – A quieter swimming spot along the Leliyn Trail, accessible via a short side track. It's less crowded than the main pool and offers a peaceful picnic spot.
- Nitmiluk National Park – Beyond the campground, the park is renowned for its ancient sandstone gorges, Aboriginal rock art, and the mighty Katherine River. Don't miss the Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge boat tours or canoe hire.
- Birdwatching – The area is a haven for birdlife, including rainbow bee-eaters, azure kingfishers, and red-tailed black cockatoos. Early mornings are best for spotting them along the water's edge.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find that one full day is enough to explore the immediate highlights around Leliyn Campground. Arrive early to secure a campsite (especially in the dry season) and spend the morning hiking the Leliyn Trail, with plenty of time for swimming at the upper pool. After a picnic lunch, you can relax by the falls or take a short drive to the Sweetwater Pool for a quieter dip. If you have a second day, consider a half-day trip to the Nitmiluk Gorge system, just 30 km south, for a boat cruise or canoe adventure. For a more immersive experience, stay two nights and use the campground as a base for exploring the wider national park.
