Plunging 15 metres into a deep, palm-fringed plunge pool, Florence Falls is one of Litchfield National Park’s most iconic and swimmable waterfalls. Surrounded by monsoon rainforest and rugged sandstone escarpments, it offers a classic Top End swimming hole experience. The falls are accessible via a sealed road, making them a popular stop on a self-drive itinerary from Darwin.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim at the base of the falls: The cool, clear plunge pool is perfect for a refreshing dip, especially during the dry season (May–October). Look for freshwater crocodiles (they're usually harmless) and watch your step on slippery rocks.
- Florence Creek Walk: A 1.2 km loop trail links the car park to the falls and continues along the creek through monsoon forest, offering birdwatching and glimpses of cycads and pandanus.
- Upper viewing platform: For a different perspective, take the short side track to a platform overlooking the top of the falls and the escarpment above.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for rainbow bee-eaters, red-tailed black cockatoos, and agile wallabies in the surrounding bushland.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1–2 hours to enjoy a swim, explore the short walking trails, and relax by the pool. If you're visiting multiple Litchfield waterfalls (e.g., Wangi and Buley Rockholes), a full day from Darwin is ideal, allowing for a leisurely pace and picnic lunch.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Buley Rockholes: A series of natural rock pools and cascades, just a 5-minute drive south – great for a different swimming experience.
- Wangi Falls: Litchfield’s largest falls, with a larger plunge pool and a café, located about 15 minutes north.
- Litchfield National Park: Explore the park’s other highlights, including the magnetic termite mounds, Tabletop Swamp, and the Lost City sandstone formations.
- Darwin: The gateway city, with its vibrant markets (Mindil Beach Sunset Market), cultural sites, and harbour cruises – a 1.5-hour drive away.
- Berry Springs Nature Park: A popular swimming spot with a kiosk, about 45 minutes from Florence Falls, ideal for a stop on the return to Darwin.
