Just 4km north of Alice Springs, the Telegraph Station is the birthplace of the town itself. This historic reserve preserves the stone buildings of the original Overland Telegraph Line, which linked Australia to the rest of the world in 1872. Wander through the restored stationmaster's residence, telegraph office and blacksmith's workshop, all set against a backdrop of rugged MacDonnell Ranges. It's a fascinating glimpse into outback pioneering life, with informative displays and a peaceful bush setting perfect for a picnic.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate around 1–2 hours to thoroughly explore the Telegraph Station and its museum. If you combine it with the School of the Air and RFDS, plan for a half-day. The site is at its best in the morning when the light is soft and the birds are active. It's also a great spot for a picnic lunch under the gum trees.
