Stretching for hundreds of kilometres east and west of Alice Springs, the MacDonnell Ranges are a dramatic spine of ancient rock that defines the Red Centre. This is a landscape of chasms, waterholes, and ghost gums, where the West MacDonnell National Park offers some of the Territory's best walking, swimming, and outback scenery. The colours shift from ochre to deep purple at sunrise and sunset, making every viewpoint a photographer's delight.
Highlights & What to See
- Simpsons Gap – A striking gap in the range with a permanent waterhole, often home to black-footed rock wallabies at dawn and dusk. Easy walk from the carpark.
- Standley Chasm – A narrow, sheer-walled chasm that glows fiery orange at midday. A short, rewarding walk leads to the dramatic cleft.
- Ochre Pits – Ancient Aboriginal ochre mines where you can see layers of coloured earth used for ceremonial painting. A fascinating cultural stop.
- Ormiston Gorge & Pound – A stunning natural amphitheatre with a permanent waterhole perfect for a swim after the 7.5 km Pound Walk. The gorge is a highlight of the West MacDonnell Ranges.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole – A deep, red-rock-fringed waterhole surrounded by coolibah trees. Ideal for a refreshing dip and a picnic.
- Glen Helen Gorge – Where the Finke River cuts through the ranges, offering spectacular views and a permanent waterhole. The Glen Helen Resort nearby provides accommodation and cold beer.
- Mount Sonder – The highest peak in the range (1380 m). A challenging overnight or dawn hike rewards with panoramic views over the West MacDonnells.
Suggested Time to Spend
To do justice to the West MacDonnell Ranges, allow at least two full days. Base yourself in Alice Springs and set out early each morning. Day one can cover Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, and Ochre Pits. Day two is ideal for Ormiston Gorge, Ellery Creek, and Glen Helen. If you're keen on hiking Mount Sonder, add a third day. The East MacDonnell Ranges (e.g., Trephina Gorge, N'Dhala Gorge) are less visited but equally rewarding; they require a separate day trip.
