Macdonnell Ranges

Stretching for hundreds of kilometres east and west of Alice Springs, the MacDonnell Ranges are a dramatic spine of ancient rock that defines the Red Centre. This is a landscape of chasms, waterholes, and ghost gums, where the West MacDonnell National Park offers some of the Territory's best walking, swimming, and outback scenery. The colours shift from ochre to deep purple at sunrise and sunset, making every viewpoint a photographer's delight.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

To do justice to the West MacDonnell Ranges, allow at least two full days. Base yourself in Alice Springs and set out early each morning. Day one can cover Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, and Ochre Pits. Day two is ideal for Ormiston Gorge, Ellery Creek, and Glen Helen. If you're keen on hiking Mount Sonder, add a third day. The East MacDonnell Ranges (e.g., Trephina Gorge, N'Dhala Gorge) are less visited but equally rewarding; they require a separate day trip.
