Mount Keira Lookout offers one of the most spectacular panoramas along the New South Wales coast. From this elevated perch, you’ll see Wollongong city unfurl below, the endless Pacific Ocean stretching to the horizon, and – on a clear day – the distant outlines of Sydney’s skyscrapers. The winding drive up through subtropical rainforest sets the scene, making the reveal at the top all the more dramatic.
Highlights & What to See
- 360-degree views from the main lookout platform – the classic photo op overlooking Wollongong harbour, the escarpment, and the ocean.
- Mount Keira Summit Walk – a 4.5 km return trail through lush rainforest, with lyrebirds and wallabies often spotted.
- Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area – explore the network of walking tracks, including the shorter, family-friendly Ring Track.
- Historic tramway site – remnants of the old coal tramway that once served the mountain’s mines.
- Sunset and stargazing – the lookout is a prime spot to watch the sun dip below the ocean and, later, see the Milky Way.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate 1–2 hours for a quick visit to soak in the views and snap photos. If you’re keen on walking, set aside half a day to tackle the summit walk or one of the shorter trails. The lookout is also a lovely quick stop combined with a drive through the rainforest – perfect for a morning or afternoon detour.
