Fitzroy Falls
Plunging 81 metres into a fern-lined gorge within Morton National Park, Fitzroy Falls is one of the New South Wales Southern Highlands’ most dramatic natural spectacles. A short, wheelchair-accessible boardwalk leads to the main lookout, where you feel the spray on your face as the water thunders into the valley. Beyond the main platform, a network of walking trails traces the escarpment edge, offering ever-changing perspectives of the waterfall and the wild, bush-clad wilderness beyond. It’s a place where the raw power of nature meets easy accessibility, perfect for a quick leg-stretch or a longer hike.
Highlights & What to See
- Main Lookout & Boardwalk: The star attraction – a paved, flat path that takes you right to the edge of the escarpment for a jaw-dropping view of the falls and the valley.
- West Rim Walking Track: A 10.5 km return walk that follows the cliff line through dry eucalypt forest and rainforest pockets, passing several smaller cascades and lookouts. Allow 3–4 hours.
- East Rim Walking Track: A shorter 2.5 km return option that leads to Renown Lookout, with panoramic views over the Kangaroo Valley and the Shoalhaven River.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for lyrebirds, wallabies, and if you’re lucky, a platypus in the pools upstream.
- Fitzroy Falls Visitor Centre: Offers informative displays about the area’s geology, history, and Aboriginal heritage, plus a café with outdoor seating overlooking the bush.
Suggested Time to Spend
If you’re just after the main lookout and a coffee, an hour is ample. For walkers, plan at least half a day – the West Rim track demands 3–4 hours, while the East Rim can be done in an hour. Combine with a picnic lunch to make the most of the setting.
