Budderoo National Park
Budderoo National Park is a lush, rainforest-cloaked wilderness just inland from the New South Wales coast, offering a cool retreat from the beach crowds. Its centerpiece is the stunning Minnamurra Rainforest, where you can walk beneath a dense canopy of towering figs, palms, and ferns, with the constant soundtrack of cascading water. This is a place for immersive nature experiences, from easy boardwalk strolls to more challenging hikes, and it’s easily woven into a day trip from Wollongong or a stop on a Sydney-to-South Coast road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Minnamurra Rainforest Walk: A spectacular 2.6 km loop on elevated boardwalks that takes you through ancient rainforest, past several waterfalls including the dramatic Minnamurra Falls. Listen for lyrebirds and look for glow-worms at dusk.
- Minnamurra Falls: The park’s signature cascade, plunging into a deep pool. The viewing platform offers a perfect photo op, and the spray keeps the air cool even on hot days.
- Lyrebird Lookout: A short side track from the main walk offers panoramic views over the forest canopy and out to the coast on clear days.
- Picnic Areas: Several shady spots near the visitor centre are ideal for a packed lunch, with barbecues and tables available.
- Birdwatching: The park is a haven for birdlife, including satin bowerbirds, king parrots, and the elusive superb lyrebird. Bring binoculars.
Suggested Time to Spend
