Perched above the shimmering waters of Port Stephens, the Three Sisters are a trio of striking volcanic rock formations that rise dramatically from the ocean. This natural landmark, located within the Tomaree National Park, offers some of the most breathtaking coastal scenery in New South Wales. The walk to the lookout is a must-do, with panoramic views that stretch across the bay to the distant lighthouse on Fingal Island. It's a place where the raw power of the Pacific meets the serene beauty of the Australian bush.
Highlights & What to See
- Three Sisters Lookout: A short but steep walk rewards you with jaw-dropping views of the rock formations and the endless blue horizon. Keep an eye out for whales during migration season (May–November).
- Tomaree Head Summit Walk: Extend your hike to the summit of Tomaree Head for a 360-degree panorama of Port Stephens, including the islands, beaches, and the vast Pacific Ocean.
- Zion Beach: A secluded, pristine beach accessible via a track from the Three Sisters carpark. Perfect for a quiet picnic or a refreshing dip away from the crowds.
- Fingal Island & Point Stephens Lighthouse: At low tide, you can walk across the sandbar to this historic lighthouse. The island is a haven for birdlife and offers excellent snorkelling in the clear waters.
- Dolphin & Whale Watching Cruises: The waters around the Three Sisters are prime spots for seeing bottlenose dolphins and, in winter, humpback whales on their annual migration.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend between two and four hours exploring the Three Sisters area. Start with the lookout walk (30 minutes return), then allow time for a hike to Tomaree Head (another 1–2 hours). If you plan to visit Zion Beach or walk to Fingal Island, add an extra hour or two. The site is best enjoyed in the morning or late afternoon when the light is golden and the heat is less intense. Combine with a dolphin cruise for a full day of coastal adventure.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Shoal Bay: A beautiful beach town with calm waters, perfect for swimming and kayaking. It's also close to the Gan Gan Lookout for another stunning view.
- Anna Bay: Famous for its massive sand dunes where you can go sandboarding or take a 4WD tour. The dunes meet the ocean at Birubi Beach, a unique landscape.
- Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary: A short drive inland, this sanctuary offers a chance to see koalas in a natural setting and learn about local wildlife conservation.
- Myall Lakes National Park: A vast wilderness of lakes, forests, and wetlands, ideal for kayaking, fishing, and bushwalking. It's about 45 minutes north of the Three Sisters.
