Port Stephens Lighthouse
Perched on the rocky headland at the southern entrance to Port Stephens, this historic lighthouse has guided mariners since 1868. The short coastal walk to reach it is as rewarding as the destination itself, with sweeping views of the bay, the Pacific Ocean, and the nearby islands. It’s a perfect spot for a picnic, whale watching (May–November), or simply soaking up the wild beauty of the NSW coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Lighthouse itself – a charming, whitewashed stone structure with a distinctive lantern room; you can’t go inside, but the exterior and setting are photogenic.
- Coastal walk – an easy 1.5 km return trail from the car park, winding through coastal heath and offering stunning seascapes. Keep an eye out for dolphins and migrating whales.
- Tomaree Head – a short drive away, this iconic summit provides panoramic views over the bay and the lighthouse from above. The hike is steep but brief (about 20 minutes).
- Fingal Bay – a beautiful, patrolled beach just south of the lighthouse, perfect for swimming and surfing. The sand spit connecting to Fingal Island is a highlight at low tide.
- Whale watching – the headland is one of the best land-based whale-watching spots in Port Stephens; bring binoculars during migration season.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1–2 hours to enjoy the walk and the lighthouse setting. If you combine it with a hike up Tomaree Head (another 1–1.5 hours) and time at Fingal Bay, you can easily fill half a day. It’s best visited in the morning for calm winds and clear light.
