Lamington National Park is a lush, World Heritage-listed rainforest wonderland in the Gold Coast hinterland, renowned for its ancient Antarctic beech trees, tumbling waterfalls, and exceptional birdlife. Part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, this park offers a cool, green escape from the coast, with well-maintained walking trails that range from gentle strolls to challenging day hikes.
Highlights & What to See
- Tree Top Walkway – A suspended bridge through the canopy at O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat, offering a bird's-eye view of the forest and its inhabitants.
- Border Track – A classic 21 km return hike along the New South Wales–Queensland border, passing through ancient rainforest and offering panoramic views from Mount Bithongabel.
- Elabana Falls – A spectacular waterfall on the Box Forest Circuit, where you can swim in the plunge pool surrounded by mossy boulders.
- Birdwatching – Spot rare species like the Albert's lyrebird, regent bowerbird, and paradise riflebird; dawn and dusk are best.
- Natural Bridge – A cave formed by a waterfall over lava flow, where glowworms illuminate the cavern at night (book ahead for guided tours).
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least a full day to experience the park's highlights. For a satisfying introduction, arrive early and tackle the 6.8 km Box Forest Circuit (3–4 hours), then visit O'Reilly's for lunch and the Tree Top Walk. If you're an avid hiker, consider an overnight stay to complete the Border Track or explore the remote western section. Two days allow you to visit both O'Reilly's and the Natural Bridge without rushing.
