Diamond Head is a stunning coastal headland within the Tomaree National Park, just north of Port Stephens. It offers some of the most dramatic ocean views on the New South Wales coast, with a relatively easy walk that rewards you with sweeping panoramas of the Pacific and the rugged shoreline. This is a must-do for nature lovers and photographers visiting the Port Stephens area.
Highlights & What to See
- Diamond Head Lookout Walk: A 3.5 km return trail through coastal heath and forest, leading to a lookout perched above the ocean. The views of the headland's sheer cliffs and the endless blue horizon are breathtaking.
- Whale Watching: From May to November, keep an eye out for humpback whales migrating along the coast. The elevated vantage point is one of the best in the region for spotting them.
- Secluded Beaches: Below the headland lie quiet, unpatrolled beaches like One Mile Beach and Fingal Bay, perfect for a post-walk dip or picnic.
- Aboriginal Heritage: The area is part of the traditional lands of the Worimi people; look for interpretive signs that share stories of their connection to this landscape.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate about 1.5 to 2 hours for the walk and time to soak in the views. If you plan to also visit the nearby beaches or have a picnic, budget a half-day. Early morning or late afternoon offers the best light for photos and fewer crowds.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
