Byfield National Park is a rugged coastal wilderness on the NSW mid-north coast, just north of Newcastle. This underrated gem combines dense rainforest, dramatic sandstone gorges, and pristine beaches, offering a raw, uncrowded escape for nature lovers and self-drive adventurers. The park’s centrepiece is the Bouddi Coastal Walk, but Byfield’s quieter trails and swimming holes reward those who venture further.
Highlights & What to See
- Bouddi Coastal Walk (part of Bouddi National Park) – A spectacular 8 km (one-way) clifftop trail with panoramic views of the Tasman Sea, secluded beaches like Maitland Bay, and historic shipwreck sites. Best done north to south to finish at the Bouddi Baths rock pool.
- Byfield Gorge – A series of deep, cool swimming holes carved into sandstone, accessed via a short walk from the campground. Perfect for a midday dip surrounded by towering eucalypts.
- Killcare Beach – A quiet, dog-friendly stretch of sand at the southern end of the park, ideal for a sunset stroll or picnic.
- Aboriginal heritage sites – Look for midden deposits and rock engravings near the coastal walk, evidence of the Darkinjung people’s long connection to this land.
- Wildlife spotting – Eastern grey kangaroos, lace monitors, and a dazzling array of birdlife (including lyrebirds) are common along the trails.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least a full day to explore Byfield National Park. Start early with the Bouddi Coastal Walk (allow 4–5 hours one-way, or arrange a car shuffle), then cool off at Byfield Gorge in the afternoon. If you’re camping, two days let you tackle the gorge trails and relax on Killcare Beach. The park is compact enough for a day trip from Sydney (1.5 hours drive), but an overnight stay immerses you in the bush.
