Box Beach is a pristine stretch of golden sand on the Tomaree Peninsula, just a short drive from Nelson Bay. Sheltered by a rocky headland and fringed with coastal bush, this north-facing beach offers calm, clear waters that are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and stand-up paddleboarding. With limited facilities and no lifeguards, it feels wonderfully uncrowded – a favorite with locals who know its gentle waves and excellent snorkeling around the rocks at the southern end.
Highlights & What to See
- Snorkeling at the southern rocks: The rocky headland at the beach’s southern end is home to a vibrant array of fish, rays, and sometimes turtles – bring your mask and fins for a rewarding snorkel.
- Swimming in the sheltered bay: The protected waters are ideal for a leisurely swim, with very little swell most days, making it safe for children and less confident swimmers.
- Coastal bushwalk from the car park: A short trail through the tea-tree and banksia scrub leads to the beach, with occasional glimpses of the bay – keep an eye out for lace monitors and wallabies.
- Sunset views from the headland: Walk to the rocky point at low tide for a front-row seat to spectacular sunsets over the bay, with the distant shape of Tomaree Head in the background.
- Picnicking in the shade: The small grassy area near the car park has a few picnic tables and BBQs – perfect for a relaxed lunch after a swim.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours at Box Beach, combining a swim, snorkel, and a picnic. If you’re keen to explore the snorkeling spots thoroughly or want to hike the nearby Tomaree Head Summit Walk (about 1.5 hours return), plan for a half-day. The beach is best visited in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and to enjoy the softer light for photography.
