Bar Beach is a wild, windswept stretch of sand on the southern side of the Port Stephens headland, where the Tasman Sea meets the mouth of the harbour. It's a favourite for surfers, beachcombers, and anyone who loves a dramatic coastal walk with views stretching from the lighthouse to the distant dunes of Stockton Beach.
Highlights & What to See
- Surfing & bodyboarding – Consistent waves, especially around the point break at the southern end; popular with locals and worth a session if you’re competent in the water.
- Bar Beach Headland Walk – A short but rewarding clifftop path leading to the historic lighthouse (Tomaree Head), with panoramic views over the bay and offshore islands – prime whale-watching in season.
- Rock pools at low tide – Explore the rocky platforms on the northern side for tiny crabs, anemones and colourful starfish; good for kids with supervision.
- Fishing from the rocks – The gutters and washes near the headland can yield bream, tailor and the occasional salmon; bring sturdy shoes and watch for sneaker waves.
- Dolphin-spotting – Bottlenose dolphins often cruise the channel between the beach and the headland, especially early morning and late afternoon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here – enough for a swim, a walk along the sand and a quick clamber up to the headland lookout. If you plan to surf or do the full Tomaree Head walk (allow another hour round trip), budget half a day. The beach is also a great quick stop on a self-drive circuit of the Port Stephens peninsula.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Nelson Bay – The main town of Port Stephens, just a 5-minute drive away, with cafés, shops and the marina for dolphin-watching cruises.
- Tomaree National Park – Home to the summit walk (stunning 360° views) and secluded beaches like Zenith and Little Beach; start from the same headland car park.
- Shoal Bay – A calm, family-friendly swimming beach on the harbour side, ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding, only 10 minutes north.
- Stockton Beach – The massive sand-dune system south of the harbour, accessible via 4WD tours or the ferry from Nelson Bay; famous for sandboarding and shipwrecks.
- Port Stephens Winery & Distillery – A short drive inland for tastings of local wines, gin and vodka, with vineyard views and a relaxed lunch spot.
