Stretching from the Sydney Opera House to the Domain, the Royal Botanic Garden is a lush 30-hectare oasis in the heart of the city. Established in 1816, it’s Australia’s oldest botanic garden and a living museum of native and exotic plants. With stunning harbour views, themed gardens, and free guided walks, it’s a perfect spot for a peaceful stroll, a picnic, or a dose of horticultural history.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1.5 to 2 hours exploring the garden at a leisurely pace. Combine it with a morning visit to the nearby Art Gallery of NSW or a walk around Farm Cove for a half-day outing. If you’re short on time, a 30-minute ‘Highlights Tour’ (free, daily at 10:30am) gives a great overview. The garden is open from 7am to dusk every day, so early mornings are peaceful and cool.
