Scotts Head is a sleepy coastal hamlet on the Mid North Coast of NSW, prized by surfers and beachcombers for its unpretentious charm and a sweeping beach that feels a world away from the nearby holiday hubs of Port Macquarie and South West Rocks. The centerpiece is a long, crescent-shaped beach flanked by a rocky headland, with clear waters that shift from deep blue to turquoise. It’s the kind of place where you can spend a whole day with just a towel, a book, and the sound of the waves.
Highlights & What to See
- Scotts Head Beach – The main draw: a patrolled swimming beach in summer, with consistent breaks for surfers and a gentle northern end for families. The beach stretches for over a kilometre, backed by low dunes and casuarina trees.
- Scotts Head Headland – A short walk from the beach offers panoramic views south to Grassy Head and north to the Nambucca River mouth. Look for whales during migration season (June–November).
- Nambucca River Mouth – Where the river meets the sea, just north of the headland. Calm for kayaking and paddleboarding, and a great spot for birdwatching – you’ll likely see pelicans, herons and the occasional sea eagle.
- Scotts Head Rock Pool – A natural ocean pool carved into the rocks at the southern end of the beach. Perfect for a safe dip when the surf is up, and a favourite for kids.
- Scotts Head General Store – The local hub for coffee, ice-creams and basic supplies. Grab a pie or a sandwich and picnic on the grass overlooking the beach.
Suggested Time to Spend
Scotts Head is a half-day to full-day stop. Most visitors come for a few hours of beach time and a coastal walk, but if you’re a keen surfer or want a truly lazy day, you could happily spend an entire day here. It’s not a place for nightlife – the appeal is its simplicity. Combine it with a morning at South West Rocks or an afternoon exploring the Nambucca River.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- South West Rocks – 20 minutes north, famous for the Trial Bay Gaol and its own stunning beaches.
- Nambucca Heads – 15 minutes south, with the iconic V-Wall (covered in painted rocks) and a lively pub scene.
- Port Macquarie – 40 minutes south, a larger coastal town with the Koala Hospital, coastal walks, and excellent cafes.
- Hat Head National Park – 30 minutes north, offering remote beaches, coastal lagoons and walking trails through coastal heath.
- Grassy Head – Just 5 minutes south, a quieter beach with a campground and a great surf break.
