Rainbow Beach lives up to its name with a stunning shoreline of multicoloured sand cliffs that blend into the deep blue of the Pacific. This coastal gem near Port Macquarie offers a quieter alternative to busier beaches, with a laid-back vibe and plenty of natural beauty to explore. The sand itself – stained by minerals like iron and rutile – creates a kaleidoscope of ochre, copper, and cream hues that shift in the afternoon light.
Highlights & What to See
- Walk the beach at low tide to see the dramatic coloured sand cliffs up close – best photographed in the late afternoon.
- Spot dolphins, whales (June–November), and seabirds from the headland; the beach is also a nesting site for sea turtles.
- Swim in the patrolled area during summer – the waves are gentle enough for families, but always check conditions.
- Explore the nearby coastal heath and paperbark swamps on the walking trails behind the dunes.
- Visit the adjacent Diamond Head for a longer coastal walk with panoramic views back over Rainbow Beach.
Suggested Time to Spend
A half-day is enough to soak up the scenery, swim, and do a short walk. If you want to hike the full circuit from Rainbow Beach to Diamond Head and back, allow 3–4 hours. Combine with a picnic to make the most of the peaceful setting. Sunrise and sunset are particularly magical here.
