Port Macquarie is a sun-drenched coastal town where the Hastings River meets the sea, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, convict history, and laid-back beach culture. The town’s compact centre is easy to explore on foot, with a lively waterfront, excellent cafes, and a friendly, welcoming vibe. Whether you’re here for the pristine beaches, the koala hospital, or the lush hinterland, Port Macquarie is a quintessential NSW coastal stop.
Highlights & What to See
- Koala Hospital – a world-first facility dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of wild koalas; the free self-guided tour is a must, and you’ll often spot koalas in the trees.
- Tacking Point Lighthouse – a charming, historic lighthouse perched on a headland with sweeping ocean views; the short walk from the carpark is a favourite for whale-watching (May–November).
- Port Macquarie Breakwall – a 4km-long breakwall covered in colourful painted rocks, perfect for a sunset stroll; you can walk all the way to the lighthouse.
- Hastings River Cruise – hop on a catamaran to explore the river’s oyster leases, spot dolphins, and learn about the area’s Indigenous heritage.
- Sea Acres Rainforest Centre – a boardwalk through a remnant of subtropical rainforest, home to towering palms, birds, and a canopy walkway.
- Port Macquarie Museum – housed in a former convict-built store, this museum dives into the town’s dual history as a penal settlement and a holiday destination.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal for Port Macquarie. Spend your first day exploring the town centre, the breakwall, and the Koala Hospital. Dedicate the second day to a river cruise and a visit to Sea Acres or a beach day at Town Beach. If you have a third day, take a short drive to the hinterland for a rainforest walk or visit the nearby vineyards. One day is enough for a quick stop, but you’ll want to linger longer.
