Pebbly Beach is a tucked-away gem on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, just south of Port Macquarie. This small, north-facing beach is sheltered by rocky headlands and fringed with a mix of sand and, as the name suggests, smooth pebbles. It's a peaceful spot for a quiet swim, a coastal walk, or a picnic, and its calm waters make it a favourite with local families. The beach is also part of the wider Port Macquarie-Hastings coastline, offering a more secluded alternative to the main surf beaches.
Highlights & What to See
- Swimming & Snorkelling – The sheltered bay and gentle waves create ideal conditions for a safe swim. Bring a mask and snorkel to explore the rocky edges where small fish and crabs hide.
- Rock Pools & Headland Walks – At low tide, the rocky platforms at either end of the beach reveal fascinating rock pools full of anemones, starfish, and tiny molluscs. The short walk up to the headland offers panoramic views back over the beach and out to sea.
- Coastal Walk to Miners Beach – A scenic 2 km walking track follows the cliffs north from Pebbly Beach to Miners Beach, passing through coastal heath and offering whale-watching opportunities from June to November.
- Picnicking & Relaxing – There's a grassy reserve behind the beach with picnic tables and barbecues, making it a great spot for a lazy afternoon. The pebbles themselves are fun to sift through – you might find smooth jasper or quartz.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here, combining a swim with a short walk and a picnic. If you're doing the full coastal walk to Miners Beach and back, allow around 1.5 hours walking time plus extra for exploring. It's a perfect stop for a half-day outing from Port Macquarie, especially in the morning when the light is soft and the beach is at its quietest.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Port Macquarie – The lively town centre, with its historic courthouse, koala hospital, and bustling waterfront, is just a 10-minute drive north.
- Miners Beach – A quieter, clothing-optional beach accessible via the coastal walk from Pebbly Beach or by a separate car park.
- North Brother Mountain – A short drive west offers a challenging hike to a lookout with sweeping views of the coast and hinterland.
- Lake Cathie – A serene coastal lake system popular for kayaking, paddleboarding, and birdwatching, about 10 minutes south.
- Lighthouse Beach & Tacking Point Lighthouse – A longer, wilder surf beach with a historic lighthouse and excellent whale-watching platform, just north of Port Macquarie.
