Port Macquarie's Northern Beaches are a string of sublime, uncrowded stretches of sand that epitomise the laidback NSW coast. Think rolling dunes, clear turquoise water and a hinterland of coastal bush – this is where locals escape the holiday crowds. Whether you're after a surf break, a family-friendly swim or a coastal walk with knockout views, these beaches deliver without the fanfare.
Highlights & What to See
- Lighthouse Beach – The northernmost beach, backed by the historic Tacking Point Lighthouse. Swim in the patrolled area, walk the coastal track to watch whales (May–November), and explore rock pools at low tide.
- Shelly Beach – A sheltered gem with calm waters ideal for snorkelling and kayaking. The adjacent Coastal Walk offers panoramic views back to the lighthouse.
- Miners Beach – An official clothing-optional beach, but also a quiet spot for a peaceful stroll among the dunes. Access via a short bush track.
- Flynn's Beach – Popular with families, with a protected swimming area, picnic shelters and a shady reserve. The adjacent Surf Life Saving Club keeps things safe in summer.
- Oxley Beach – A reliable surf break for intermediate boardriders, with a dramatic headland backdrop. Good for a sunset walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least half a day to explore two or three beaches and the coastal walk between them. A full day allows time for a surf lesson, a picnic lunch on the sand, and a sunset drink at a beachfront café. If you're self-driving, you can easily hop between beaches – parking is plentiful at most spots.
