Mount Laurieton
Rising dramatically from the heart of Port Macquarie, Mount Laurieton offers sweeping panoramic views of the Hastings River, the coastline, and the surrounding hinterland. This compact but rewarding lookout is a must for anyone seeking a quick dose of nature without venturing far from town. The short, steep walk to the summit is lined with coastal heath and eucalypts, and the reward at the top is a stunning 360-degree vista that’s especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Lookout – The main attraction, with bench seats and interpretive signs pointing out landmarks from the coast to the mountains. It’s a prime spot for photography, whale watching (May–November), and simply soaking in the scale of the landscape.
- Walking Trail – A 1.2 km loop (about 30 minutes return) that climbs gently through dry sclerophyll forest. Keep an eye out for goannas, wallabies, and a variety of birdlife, including rainbow lorikeets and kookaburras.
- Picnic Facilities – Several shaded tables near the base of the trail make this a lovely spot for a packed lunch before or after your walk. There’s also a small car park with direct access to the trailhead.
- Nearby Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park – Just a few minutes’ drive away, this wetland reserve offers boardwalks through mangroves and a chance to see waterbirds and turtles – an easy add-on to your Mount Laurieton visit.
Suggested Time to Spend
Mount Laurieton is a quick stop – budget 45 minutes to 1 hour for the walk and lookout time. If you want to linger for sunrise or sunset photography, allow an extra 30 minutes. The short duration makes it an ideal leg-stretcher between other Port Macquarie attractions or a gentle morning activity before heading to the beach.
