Lawrence is a tiny, tranquil hamlet on the banks of the Clarence River, about 40 kilometres west of Yamba. This is classic Northern Rivers backcountry: quiet country roads, working farms, and a sense of being a world away from the coast. The main draw is the river itself – wide, slow-moving and perfect for kayaking, fishing or just watching the light change over the water. There’s not much in the way of shops or services, so come prepared with supplies and a willingness to slow right down.
Highlights & What to See
- Clarence River at Lawrence – Find the public boat ramp and picnic area; it’s the perfect spot to launch a kayak or simply sit and watch the river life drift by.
- Lawrence Ferry – One of the last cable ferries on the Clarence, this free crossing connects Lawrence to the south bank and is a charming piece of working river history.
- Lawrence Cemetery – A small, historic graveyard that tells the story of early European settlement in the area; peaceful and unexpectedly poignant.
- Bushwalking and birdwatching – The surrounding farmland and riverine forest are home to kangaroos, wallabies and a huge variety of birdlife, especially waterbirds.
- Fishing – The Clarence is famous for its bass, bream and flathead; locals rate the stretch near Lawrence for a quiet day’s fishing.
Suggested Time to Spend
Lawrence is a short stop or a half-day detour at most. If you’re kayaking or fishing, you could easily while away a few hours; otherwise, 30–60 minutes is enough to see the ferry, wander the cemetery and soak up the river views. It’s best combined with a drive along the Clarence Valley or as a quick break between Grafton and Yamba.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Yamba – The laid-back coastal town at the mouth of the Clarence, with great beaches, cafés and a lovely lighthouse walk.
- Grafton – The historic city of the Clarence Valley, famous for its jacaranda-lined streets and heritage architecture.
- Ulmarra – A pretty riverside village with antique shops and a historic pub; a great lunch stop.
- Maclean – Known as the ‘Scottish Town in Australia’, with tartan street signs and a scenic lookout over the river.
- Clarence River – The entire valley is worth exploring; consider a river cruise or kayak hire from one of the larger towns.
