Hill End
Hill End is a beautifully preserved gold-rush ghost town tucked into the rolling hills of the Central Tablelands, about 80 kilometres inland from Port Macquarie. Once a booming mining centre with over 8,000 residents, today it’s a quiet, evocative village where you can wander dirt roads lined with original 19th-century buildings, poke into tiny museums, and try your luck with a pan in the creek. It feels like stepping onto a film set – but it’s gloriously real.
Highlights & What to See
- Hill End Historic Site: The entire village is a heritage gem. Don’t miss the Royal Hotel (still serving cold beers), the old post office, and the beautifully restored cottages.
- Bald Hill Lookout: A short walk from the village offers sweeping views over the surrounding countryside and a sense of the immense scale of the old gold diggings.
- Holtermann’s Gold: Visit the site where the world’s largest gold specimen – a 286-kilogram monster – was unearthed in 1872. A replica is on display in the visitors centre.
- Fossicking: You can try your hand at gold panning in designated areas along the Turon River. Even if you don’t strike it rich, it’s a fun way to connect with the area’s history.
- Art & Culture: Hill End attracts artists and photographers. Pop into the Hill End Centre for Contemporary Art or just wander – the rusty tin roofs and dusty streets are endlessly photogenic.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to explore the main sights, have lunch at the Royal Hotel and soak up the atmosphere. But if you’re a history buff or keen to do some fossicking, plan a full day. For a truly immersive experience, stay overnight in one of the heritage cottages – the silence after dark is profound, and you’ll have the village almost to yourself at sunrise.
