Hat Head is a sleepy coastal hamlet on the Mid North Coast of NSW, where the Hat Head National Park meets the sea. It’s a place for barefoot walks on empty beaches, birdwatching in coastal heath, and soaking up uncrowded ocean views. The village itself is tiny, but the surrounding national park and pristine beaches are the real draw.
Highlights & What to See
- Hat Head National Park – Explore walking trails through coastal heath and littoral rainforest, with excellent birdwatching and whale-watching (May–November). The Hat Head Walk from the car park to the headland offers sweeping ocean views.
- Hat Head Beach – A long, uncrowded stretch of sand perfect for swimming, surfing, and fishing. The southern end is patrolled in summer.
- Korogoro Point Lookout – Short walk from the car park to a platform with panoramic views of the coast and, in season, migrating humpback whales.
- Smoky Cape Lighthouse – A short drive south (in Arakoon National Park), this historic lighthouse offers guided tours and breathtaking views from the cape.
- Hat Head Village – A tiny settlement with a general store and a few holiday rentals, exuding a relaxed, old-school beach vibe.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to explore the national park’s main walks and enjoy the beach. If you want to include Smoky Cape Lighthouse or a longer hike, allow a full day. For a relaxing beach escape, consider staying overnight in one of the holiday cottages.
