Coogee Beach is a compact, family-friendly stretch of sand just south of Port Macquarie’s town centre. Sheltered by rocky headlands, its calm waters make it a safe swimming spot, while the adjacent coastal walk offers striking ocean views. This laid-back beach is popular with locals for morning jogs, picnics, and sunset strolls, and its grassy foreshore is dotted with picnic tables and a playground. The beach’s relaxed vibe and easy access to cafés make it a perfect spot to unwind after exploring the region.
Highlights & What to See
- Swimming & Snorkelling: The sheltered bay is ideal for swimming, with a patrolled area in summer. Snorkellers can explore the rocky reef at the southern end, where you might spot schools of fish and the occasional stingray.
- Coogee Beach Coastal Walk: This scenic 2.5 km path hugs the headland between Coogee Beach and Flynn’s Beach, passing lookout points with benches perfect for whale watching (June–November).
- Foreshore Park: A grassy reserve with barbecues, shaded tables, and a children’s playground, making it a great spot for a family picnic or a relaxed afternoon.
- Rock Pools at Low Tide: At the southern end, natural rock pools are exposed during low tide, offering a safe spot for kids to paddle and explore marine life.
- Nearby Cafés: A short walk from the sand, you’ll find local favourites like Coogee Beach Café serving excellent coffee and fish and chips.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is plenty to enjoy Coogee Beach: spend a couple of hours swimming and sunbathing, then take the coastal walk (allow 45 minutes one-way) and finish with a meal at a nearby café. If you’re combining it with other Port Macquarie beaches, you could easily fit it into a morning or afternoon. The beach is also a lovely spot for a sunset picnic, so consider timing your visit for late afternoon.
