Flowing through lush farmland and past sleepy riverside villages, the Clarence River — Australia’s largest river system north of the Murray — defines this laid-back corner of northern NSW. The valley is a patchwork of sugar cane fields, banana plantations and pockets of subtropical rainforest, with a pace of life that feels a world away from the coast. For travellers, it’s a place to slow down, get on the water, and soak up a rich history that stretches from Bundjalung Country to the cedar-cutters and dairy farmers who followed.
Highlights & What to See
- Yamba – This coastal gem at the river’s mouth offers superb surf breaks, a lighthouse walk with sweeping views, and a clutch of excellent cafés. Don’t miss the Yamba Museum for local history.
- Grafton – Famous for its jacaranda trees (blooming in late spring), Grafton’s heritage streetscapes and cathedral are best explored on a self-guided walk. The Clarence River precinct has a lovely riverside boardwalk.
- Ulmarra – A tiny, perfectly preserved riverside village with antique shops, a historic pub, and the Ulmarra Ferry — a cable ferry that’s been crossing since 1900.
- River cruises & kayaking – Several operators offer cruises from Grafton or Yamba, or hire a kayak to explore the river’s quiet backwaters and spot sea eagles and dolphins.
- Yuraygir National Park – Stretching north of Yamba, this park protects coastal heath, lakes and beaches. The Yuraygir Coastal Walk is a multi-day trek, but day walks from Angourie or Brooms Head are rewarding.
- Bundjalung National Park – On the river’s southern side, this park has excellent bushwalks, swimming holes and the iconic Iluka Bluff lookout.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give the Clarence Valley at least two to three days to do it justice. Base yourself in Yamba for a relaxed beach-and-river vibe, then spend a day exploring Grafton’s heritage and a day driving the back roads through Ulmarra and Maclean (the “Scottish Town”) with its tartan-painted power poles. If you’re a keen paddler or walker, add an extra day for the national parks.
