Stretching along Port Macquarie's stunning coastline, the Blue Mile Walk is a scenic three-kilometre pathway that connects the town's best beaches, riverfront and historic sites. This easy, fully accessible walk offers ever-changing views of the Pacific Ocean, the Hastings River and the hinterland, making it a perfect introduction to the area for travellers on a self-drive holiday. With plenty of cafes, lookouts and public art along the way, it’s a relaxed way to soak up the coastal vibe and spot dolphins or migrating whales (June–November).
Highlights & What to See
- Tacking Point Lighthouse – One of Australia's oldest surviving lighthouses (built 1879), perched on a headland with panoramic ocean views and a prime whale-watching platform.
- Port Macquarie Breakwall – A lively stretch where locals and visitors paint rocks, fish and watch boats enter the river. The breakwall is also the start of the Coastal Walk to Lighthouse Beach.
- Town Beach & Flynns Beach – Two patrolled swimming beaches ideal for a dip or a picnic. Town Beach is right in the heart of town, while Flynns is quieter and popular with surfers.
- Historic Port Macquarie Settlement – The walk passes the site of Australia's third penal settlement; look for interpretive signs and the old cemetery near the river.
- Public Art & Sculptures – Keep an eye out for the 'Big Oyster' and other quirky installations along the path, plus the colourful murals in the town centre.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–1.5 hours to walk the full Blue Mile one-way, plus extra time for stops at lookouts, cafes and beaches. If you want to swim or linger, budget half a day. The walk is flat and paved, so it’s suitable for all fitness levels and prams. Many visitors combine it with a morning coffee at a beachfront cafe or an afternoon fish and chips on the grass at Westport Park.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Cowarrra Creek & Lake Cathie – A tranquil lake and estuary system 15 minutes south, great for kayaking, birdwatching and peaceful walks.
- Sea Acres Rainforest Centre – A boardwalk through protected coastal rainforest just south of town, offering a lush contrast to the ocean views.
- Port Macquarie Koala Hospital – A world-famous wildlife hospital where you can see rescued koalas and learn about conservation – a 5-minute drive from the walk.
- Hastings River Winery – Sample local wines and enjoy river views on a cellar-door visit, about 10 minutes west of the town centre.
- North Brother Mountain – A challenging but rewarding hike with 360-degree views over the coast and hinterland, 20 minutes north of Port Macquarie.
