Angourie is a sleepy coastal hamlet just south of Yamba, famous among surfers for its world-class right-hand point break. But even if you don't ride the waves, the dramatic headlands, pristine beaches and lush rainforest walks make this a must-visit stop on the North Coast. With a laid-back, barefoot vibe and a handful of excellent cafes, it's the kind of place where you can easily lose a day watching the swell roll in.
Highlights & What to See
- Angourie Point – One of Australia's most legendary right-hand point breaks, best for experienced surfers. Even non-surfers will love watching the action from the grassy headland.
- Angourie Blue and Green Pools – Two stunning, spring-fed swimming holes surrounded by rainforest. The Blue Pool is deeper and more popular; the Green Pool is quieter and great for a peaceful dip.
- Yuraygir National Park – The park's northern section offers excellent coastal walks, including the Angourie to Shelley Beach track, with sweeping ocean views and chances to spot whales (June–November).
- Spookys Beach – A patrolled beach perfect for swimming and family outings, with a cafe and picnic facilities nearby.
- Angourie Rainforest Boardwalk – A short, easy loop through lush littoral rainforest, with interpretive signs about local flora and fauna.
Suggested Time to Spend
Angourie can be explored in a half-day, but to truly soak up the atmosphere, plan a full day. Start with a morning surf or a swim in the Blue Pool, then tackle the coastal walk in Yuraygir National Park. After lunch at one of the local cafes, spend the afternoon lazing on Spookys Beach or watching the surfers at the Point. If you're a keen surfer, you'll want to stay multiple days to chase the waves.
