Step into a living fragment of ancient lowland rainforest at Wingham Brush Nature Reserve, a pristine pocket of subtropical vegetation on the banks of the Manning River. This 8-hectare reserve is one of the finest examples of its kind in New South Wales, with towering fig trees, giant stinging trees, and a rich understorey of palms and ferns. Walking the elevated boardwalk feels like entering a cathedral of green, where the calls of wompoo fruit-doves and green catbirds echo overhead. It’s a mesmerising stop for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and anyone craving a serene immersion in Australia’s wild heart.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours exploring the boardwalk and soaking up the atmosphere. If you’re a keen birdwatcher or photographer, allow at least two hours to fully appreciate the wildlife and light filtering through the canopy. The reserve is compact, so it works wonderfully as a side trip of a couple of hours when travelling between Port Macquarie and Taree, or as a peaceful morning or afternoon stop on a self-drive itinerary along the Mid North Coast.
