Wingham Brush is a serene pocket of subtropical rainforest on the banks of the Manning River, just a short drive from the historic town of Wingham. This 8-hectare reserve is a haven for nature lovers, with a raised boardwalk that weaves through towering figs, cabbage tree palms, and a dense understorey of ferns and vines. The air is thick with birdsong, and if you're lucky, you might spot a flying fox colony roosting in the canopy. It's a peaceful, immersive escape that feels a world away from the coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Boardwalk Loop: The 700-metre elevated boardwalk is the main draw, offering an easy, wheelchair-accessible stroll through the rainforest. Listen for the whip-crack call of the eastern whipbird and keep an eye out for water dragons sunning themselves on the boards.
- Historic Wingham: Before or after your walk, explore Wingham's main street, lined with beautifully preserved 19th-century buildings, antique shops, and cafes. The Wingham Museum, housed in the old School of Arts, is a charming detour.
- Manning River: The brush borders the river, and there's a small picnic area and canoe launch. You can paddle through the rainforest fringe or simply sit on the bank and watch for azure kingfishers.
- Flying Fox Colony: At dusk, thousands of grey-headed flying foxes take to the sky – a spectacular, if noisy, natural phenomenon. The best viewpoint is from the boardwalk near the river.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours to walk the boardwalk at a leisurely pace and soak in the atmosphere. If you combine it with a wander around Wingham town and perhaps a coffee at one of the local cafes, plan for half a day. The brush is at its best in the morning when the light filters through the canopy and the birds are most active.
