Waukope
Waukope is a tiny, tranquil locality in the Port Macquarie hinterland, where the lush green hills of the Camden Haven region roll down towards the coast. It’s the kind of place you drive through on the way to somewhere else, but slowing down here rewards you with a slice of authentic Australian rural life, a handful of excellent bushwalks, and a palpable sense of peace that feels a world away from the beach crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Bago Bluff National Park – Just north of Waukope, this park offers dramatic escarpment views and the challenging but rewarding Bago Bluff walking track. The views from the top across the Hastings Valley and out to the coast are stunning, especially in the late afternoon light.
- Lake Innes Nature Reserve – A short drive east, this reserve protects a large coastal lake system. It’s fantastic for birdwatching (look for black swans and egrets) and has several walking trails that weave through paperbark swamps and open forest.
- Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park – Back in Port Macquarie, this hidden gem has a lovely boardwalk loop through mangroves and rainforest, with a chance to see flying foxes roosting in the trees.
- Port Macquhire Historic Courthouse – For a dose of history, this beautifully restored 1860s courthouse offers a glimpse into the region’s convict and colonial past.
Suggested Time to Spend
Waukope itself is more of a stopover than a destination, so half a day is plenty. Combine a morning walk in Bago Bluff National Park with a picnic lunch, then spend the afternoon exploring Lake Innes Nature Reserve or the historic sights in Port Macquarie. If you’re a keen bushwalker, you could easily fill a full day with the longer trails in Bago Bluff.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Port Macquarie – Just 20 minutes east, the bustling coastal hub offers beaches, a lively waterfront, and the famous Koala Hospital.
- Wauchope – A charming historic town on the Hastings River, with a great farmers’ market and the fascinating Big Timbers Museum.
- Camden Haven – The string of villages (Laurieton, North Haven, Kendall) around the Camden Haven River system offer peaceful waterways, oyster leases, and the striking North Brother Mountain lookout.
- Ellenborough Falls – About an hour’s drive inland, this is one of Australia’s highest single-drop waterfalls, well worth the detour for a spectacular sight.
