Triabunna is a quiet coastal town on Tasmania's east coast, serving as the main gateway to Maria Island National Park. With a working fishing port, a handful of cafes, and a relaxed atmosphere, it's the perfect base for exploring the island's stunning wildlife, convict history, and pristine beaches.
Highlights & What to See
- Maria Island National Park: Take the ferry from Triabunna to this wildlife haven, where you can spot wombats, kangaroos, and Tasmanian devils up close. Cycle or walk to the fossil cliffs, painted cliffs, and the historic Darlington Probation Station (a UNESCO World Heritage site).
- Spring Bay Mill: A former woodchip mill transformed into an arts and events space, with striking industrial architecture, galleries, and a cafe. Check for exhibitions or just wander the grounds.
- Triabunna Wharf: Watch fishing boats come and go, and grab fish and chips from the local takeaway. The wharf area is also where the Maria Island ferry departs.
- Bicheno: A short drive north, this coastal town offers the famous Bicheno Blowhole, penguin tours at dusk, and excellent diving and snorkelling at the Governor Island Marine Reserve.
Suggested Time to Spend
Triabunna itself is small – you can see the town in an hour or two. Most travellers base themselves here for at least one full day to explore Maria Island. If you're keen on bushwalking, allow two days on the island (overnight stays are possible in basic accommodation). Add an extra half-day to visit Spring Bay Mill and the nearby beaches. For a relaxed east coast itinerary, combine Triabunna with a night in Bicheno or Freycinet National Park.
