Tangalooma Island Resort
Moreton Island's only resort, Tangalooma Island Resort offers a unique blend of wild dolphin feeding, shipwreck snorkelling, and sand dune adventures, all within easy reach of Brisbane. It's the perfect escape for families, couples, and solo travellers seeking a self-contained island experience with a touch of luxury.
Highlights & What to See
- Dolphin Feeding: Every evening at sunset, wild bottlenose dolphins swim right up to the jetty for a hand-fed fish. It's an unforgettable, up-close wildlife encounter that's been a tradition for decades.
- Tangalooma Wrecks: Fifteen deliberately sunken ships create an artificial reef teeming with marine life. Snorkel or dive among colourful fish, turtles, and rays in crystal-clear waters just offshore.
- Desert Sand Dunes: The island's massive sand dunes, including the 'Desert', offer thrilling sand tobogganing – slide down at speeds up to 60 km/h. It's a must-do for adrenaline seekers.
- Whale Watching (June–October): Humpback whales migrate past the island, and the resort runs dedicated cruises. Seeing a whale breach against the backdrop of the wrecks is spectacular.
- Four-Wheel Driving & Bushwalking: Moreton Island is a national park with 40 km of beaches and bush tracks. Hire a 4WD or join a tour to explore the Cape Moreton Lighthouse, Blue Lagoon, and North Point.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors stay 2–3 nights to fully experience the resort and the island's natural attractions. A day trip is possible from Brisbane (75-minute ferry) but feels rushed – you'll miss the sunset dolphin feeding and the chance to explore the island's wilder side. If you can, extend to 4 nights to add a 4WD self-drive or a guided kayak tour around the wrecks.
